For example, if you\u2019re creating an <a href=\"https:\/\/audiotheme.com\/blog\/how-to-create-an-epk-for-your-band\/\">EPK<\/a> for your band, you may want to include photos, music, videos, and more all on one page. This will allow a visitor to get a pretty well rounded view of your band from one spot. The downside to this of course, is that adding all of that content can make for a pretty long page. If users don\u2019t know that there is content buried further down the page, they may never find it. In this post, we\u2019ll show you how to organize longer pages by using anchor links.<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Step 1: Create a page and add the content.<\/h2>\n<p>I\u2019ll be using our <a href=\"https:\/\/audiotheme.com\/view\/ovation\/\">Ovation theme<\/a> to create an EPK for this demo. You can see the final product of this tutorial <a href=\"https:\/\/demo.audiotheme.com\/ovation\/epk\/\">here<\/a>. I\u2019ll start by creating a new page called EPK and adding the content I want. I\u2019ll include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Brief bio<\/li>\n<li>One sheet download<\/li>\n<li>High quality photos<\/li>\n<li>A playlist of live recordings<\/li>\n<li>Videos of live shows<\/li>\n<li>Reviews from booking agents<\/li>\n<li>Contact form<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/anchor-links-content.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1147\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">In this demo, I&#8217;ve created a long page with several different &#8220;sections&#8221; of content.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As you can imagine, adding all of this content will make the EPK page long. So long that someone coming to visit it may not even know exactly what all is included on the page. Adding anchor links to the page and navigation will help with the page\u2019s organization and usability.<\/p>\n<h2>Step 2: Create your anchor links for each section<\/h2>\n<p>In the demo, I\u2019ve used a spacer block and separator block to break the sections up.<br \/>\nOnce you\u2019ve created your page sections in the Gutenberg editor, you can add anchors to each of them.<\/p>\n<p>An anchor link allows you to hyperlink directly to that section of the page. You create an anchor link to any element with an <code>id<\/code> attribute. Usually you&#8217;ll add the <code>id<\/code> attribute to an <code>h2<\/code> heading. If you add a heading in Gutenberg, then look in the &#8220;Advanced&#8221; panel in the <strong>Block Settings<\/strong> sidebar, you&#8217;ll see a field for adding an &#8220;HTML Anchor&#8221; there. There&#8217;s also a link with some useful information that&#8217;s worth exploring.<\/p>\n<p>Keep in mind that anchor text and links do have some impact on SEO. <a href=\"https:\/\/moz.com\/learn\/seo\/anchor-text\">Moz recommends<\/a> that anchor text be succinct, relevant, not generic, and not overly keyword heavy.<\/p>\n<p>For our demo, I&#8217;ll add the HTML anchor to the heading for the Band Biography section.<\/p>\n<pre><code>bio<\/code><\/pre>\n<figure id=\"attachment_53343\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-53343\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-53343\" src=\"https:\/\/audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/html-anchor.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"617\" srcset=\"https:\/\/audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/html-anchor.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/html-anchor-300x154.jpg 300w, https:\/\/audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/html-anchor-1024x527.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/html-anchor-768x395.jpg 768w, https:\/\/audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/html-anchor-840x432.jpg 840w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-53343\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Add your Anchor in the Advanced settings of your heading block.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>You can do the same for each of the other sections of your EPK page.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_53345\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-53345\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-53345\" src=\"https:\/\/audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/html-anchor-photos.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"617\" srcset=\"https:\/\/audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/html-anchor-photos.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/html-anchor-photos-300x154.jpg 300w, https:\/\/audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/html-anchor-photos-1024x527.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/html-anchor-photos-768x395.jpg 768w, https:\/\/audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/html-anchor-photos-840x432.jpg 840w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-53345\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Keep your a names short and simple.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Repeat this process until you\u2019ve added HTML anchors to each of your page sections.<\/p>\n<h2>Step 3: Create links for your HTML anchors at the top of the page<\/h2>\n<p>Now that you\u2019ve created the anchors, it\u2019s time to set up the links to them. The best way to organize your links is to create a list at the top of the page.<\/p>\n<p>First, we\u2019ll create a new \u201cjump to section\u201d heading. Below that, we\u2019ll list each section of the page, keeping in mind the SEO factors I mentioned earlier. I\u2019ve centered my links and added a pipe symbol as a means of separating each of the sections. You can style your links however you\u2019d like.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_53348\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-53348\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-53348\" src=\"https:\/\/audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/achor-menu.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"617\" srcset=\"https:\/\/audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/achor-menu.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/achor-menu-300x154.jpg 300w, https:\/\/audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/achor-menu-1024x527.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/achor-menu-768x395.jpg 768w, https:\/\/audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/achor-menu-840x432.jpg 840w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-53348\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Using a paragraph block, add the names of your page sections. You can separate them with the pipe symbol like I have here.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Next, we\u2019ll add the links to each of our sections. Linking to a section on a page requires adding a hash symbol followed by the section&#8217;s anchor. For example, linking to the contact section on the EPK page would look like this:<\/p>\n<pre><code>#contact<\/code><code><\/code><\/pre>\n<figure id=\"attachment_53350\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-53350\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-53350\" src=\"https:\/\/audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/anchor-link-contact-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"617\" srcset=\"https:\/\/audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/anchor-link-contact-1.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/anchor-link-contact-1-300x154.jpg 300w, https:\/\/audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/anchor-link-contact-1-1024x527.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/anchor-link-contact-1-768x395.jpg 768w, https:\/\/audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/anchor-link-contact-1-840x432.jpg 840w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-53350\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Link each of your page sections to the corresponding anchors you added in the previous step.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The end result on the front end is a menu of links that allow a user to jump to a specific section of the page.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_53352\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-53352\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-53352\" src=\"https:\/\/audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/anchor-link-menu.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"980\" srcset=\"https:\/\/audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/anchor-link-menu.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/anchor-link-menu-300x245.jpg 300w, https:\/\/audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/anchor-link-menu-1024x836.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/anchor-link-menu-768x627.jpg 768w, https:\/\/audiotheme.com\/content\/uploads\/anchor-link-menu-840x686.jpg 840w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-53352\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The list of links will act as a menu for your page, allowing users to jump to certain sections.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Step 4: Optional upgrades<\/h2>\n<h3>Back to top link<\/h3>\n<p>If your page is really long, you may want to consider adding \u201cback to top\u201d links throughout. All modern browsers understand where the top of the page is, so there&#8217;s no need to add an HTML anchor for that. You simply need to add the link. At the end of each section, you could create a link that says \u201cback to top\u201d, and use the following for the link:<\/p>\n<pre><code>&lt;a href=\"#top\"&gt;Back to top&lt;a\/&gt;\r\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<h3>Add your anchor links to your menu<\/h3>\n<p>If you\u2019re sending an EPK out for promotional purposes, you may not want to put a link to it in your menu. However, if you want visitors to find it on their own, you can add it to the main site menu. You can also add your anchor links as submenu items. This setup allows us to combine relevant info into one page, but still keep it organized.
