How to Hack the Music Industry

Let’s be honest. The music industry is not easy to break into. Forget the odds of becoming a national or worldwide sensation… It can be difficult to make a comfortable living as a musician.

Bookings, promotions, signings, recordings, and funding can sometimes seem to be totally out of your control. Is there a better way? What if you could “hack” the music industry?

Nowell 2.0 is here!

It’s been over a year since Nowell was initially released. In that time, we’ve received some great feedback, suggestions, and ideas to improve the theme and overall experience. We also had a few ideas of our own to help streamline the process for site admins managing content, developers looking to customize the theme, and visitors browsing the site.

In Nowell 2.0, we’ve added new features and removed a few, too. Have no fear, everything in version 1.x is still available, however, a few updates will be needed.

Huesos: A Functionally Sound WordPress Theme for Musicians

We’re beyond excited to announce our latest WordPress theme, Huesos (Spanish for bones), a functionally sound WordPress theme for musicians.

Why bones? Normally, we don’t think about bones until one malfunctions, but they provide the structure to these highly evolved vessels we call bodies. Without them we’d be a squishy mass of flesh and organs. On the surface they don’t seem complex, but bones are our foundation, our little pillars of support. That’s the kind of functional simplicity we tried to achieve with our latest theme, and thus the name — Huesos.

A Primer on WordPress Permalinks

Permalinks are the URLs people use to access content on your site. Luckily, WordPress gives you the option to change the permalink structure of your website. This allows for easier sharing, intuitive navigation, and gives your site some added SEO functionality.

WordPress, by default, uses a http://example.com/?p=%ID% structure. As you are probably aware, this is not very user friendly. Imagine explaining to someone that in order to hear some of your music, they should visit http://example.com/?p=123.

Effectively Using Videos to Promote Your Music

Over 6 billion hours of video are watched each month on YouTube, and the platform reaches more US adults aged 18-34 than any cable television network.*

Some of the biggest names in music right now got their start by uploading videos to different platforms like Vimeo, Facebook, and YouTube. Boyce Avenue started off recording cover videos and are now the most subscribed to YouTube artists. Tyler Ward will tell you that his social media fans are what made it possible for him to have a career in music.

So how can musicians utilize videos to their best ability? Here are just a few ideas.
